What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a minimally-invasive skincare procedure that is used to improve sun damage, age spots, acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines, and other cosmetic skin issues. The microdermabrasion tool consists of a special abrasive applicator, which gently smooths away the outermost top layer of your skin, leaving behind more youthful, fresh, and even looking skin. The treatment option can be done in our Miami, Florida dermatology office and is considered to be safe for most people. Microdermabrasion could be a good option for you if you are concerned about:
- Age spots
- Brown spots
- Fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Blackheads or whiteheads
- Acne or acne scars
- Stretch marks
- Uneven skin tone
- Uneven skin texture
- Sun damage
- Dull skin complexion
Many choose microdermabrasion to help solve damaged or aging skin for its many benefits, which include:
- Reduces the appearance of facial aging and damage
- Little or no downtime after procedure
- Noticeable results immediately following the treatment
- Simple, in-office procedure
- Can be repeated for severe skin concerns
- May improve circulation and blood flow

- Safe for most people and skin types
- Can be used for a wide range of skin issues
Who is a Candidate for Microdermabrasion?
The microdermabrasion procedure is most suitable for people with relatively light skin who want to stimulate cellular turnover and tissue regeneration. Due to the way in which the process works, microdermabrasion is not appropriate for darker skin tones. In this instance, there is a risk of scarring or unwanted pigment changes. Microdermabrasion may be a good treatment option for the correction of sun damage, age spots, clogged pores, rough texture, and shallow lines and wrinkles. If you have mild acne or rosacea, you may be a good candidate for this treatment. If your rosacea is more severe, your provider may recommend against microdermabrasion. Our goal is for every patient to achieve results that they love. To reach this goal, we begin each treatment with a thorough consultation and skin examination.
What is the Microdermabrasion Procedure Like?
Microdermabrasion is performed in the office. You will not need anesthesia of any kind, and will sit comfortably in a reclined seat for your treatment. To gently resurface and polish your skin, your provider will pass a handheld device over your treatment area. You may wear special goggles for this portion of your appointment or have your eyes covered with lightweight pieces of cloth. After the area has been thoroughly exfoliated, your provider may apply a moisturizer, special serum, or sunscreen. You can expect to feel a scratching or sandpaper-like sensation during your microdermabrasion treatment. This may feel odd or slightly uncomfortable but it should not be painful. Your entire appointment may last about an hour.
Can I Go Back to Work After a Microdermabrasion Treatment?
You may be able to go right back to work and other normal activities after your microdermabrasion appointment. It is acceptable to apply makeup right away. Doing so may disguise the redness or flushed appearance that can occur after this deeply exfoliating procedure. The minor redness that can occur after microdermabrasion should last only a short while. It may be so subtle that you do not feel the need to apply makeup for the remainder of the day.
When Will I See Results from Microdermabrasion?
Your microdermabrasion results will be visible right away. Not only will your skin look brighter and smoother, but it will feel softer as well.
How Many Treatments are Needed?
You only need one microdermabrasion treatment to notice softer, smoother skin. That said, your skin regenerates on a monthly basis. About four weeks after your treatment, you may notice that your skin doesn't look quite as radiant and youthful as it did. Microdermabrasion is gentle enough to have done every two to four weeks. Doing so can prolong the effects of healthy cellular turnover.
Are There Any Risks with Microdermabrasion?
When you receive microdermabrasion from a skilled technician, your risks should be very minimal. The common side effects that may occur after this treatment include redness, minor swelling, dryness and flaking, and increased photosensitivity (wear sunscreen). There is a risk of scarring if microdermabrasion is performed on darker skin tones. To avoid unwanted side effects, schedule your microdermabrasion with an experienced provider.
How long do the effects of microdermabrasion last?
After using microdermabrasion for age spots or wrinkles, you’ll need to take special care of your skin for six to 12 months. Avoid sun exposure and allow your skin to heal. After a few months, you’ll begin to see noticeable improvements in your skin’s tone and smoothness as well as reduced fine lines and wrinkles.
Microdermabrasion can provide long-lasting results, but keep in mind that your skin’s improvements may not be permanent. Your skin will likely change over time as you are exposed to sunlight, squint or use your facial muscles, and continue to age. Microdermabrasion can be repeated over time if your dermatologist recommends a repeated procedure.
Does microdermabrasion hurt?
Microdermabrasion is a safe and relatively painless procedure for most people. However, it will likely cause some discomfort during the procedure, as the microdermabrasion tool applies some pressure to your skin’s surface while exfoliating. After the procedure, your skin may feel tighter or slightly sensitive, but you should not feel any severe pain. If you are feeling pain, ask your doctor about taking an over-the-counter pain relief medication to help.
How do you prepare for microdermabrasion?
Before your microdermabrasion procedure, you’ll meet with one of our skilled staff members to go over the entire procedure with you and to make sure all of your questions have been answered. We will also review all of your medical history, ask you questions about any medications you are currently taking, and do a physical exam of the treatment area. Depending on the thickness, tone, and overall health of your skin, your procedure and procedure goals will be adjusted and communicated to you. During this meeting, you’ll also have time to discuss your goals for the treatment and your doctor will give you a timeline of what you can expect in the weeks and months following the procedure.
Some of the things your doctor might recommend you do before the procedure include:
- Set up a friend or loved one to give you a ride home after the procedure
- Stop taking certain medications (e.g., blood thinners)
- Stop smoking
- Take an antiviral medication
- Take an antibiotic medication to prevent an infection if you have acne
- Have Botox injections to improve your microdermabrasion results
- Use a retinoid cream in the weeks before the procedure
- Avoid excessive sun exposure
Can microdermabrasion treat wrinkles & fine lines?
For many of our patients, microdermabrasion has proven successful in improving fine lines and wrinkles on the face. After the skin has completely healed following microdermabrasion, patients notice that their skin is clearer, smoother, and more youthful looking than before the treatment. Dermabrasion works by gently removing the outer layers of the skin, which reveals a softer, smoother layer of skin below it.
